Frohe Weihnacht

Happy Christmas

Today is my last day at the office. That is why I wish you all a very happy Christmas with family or friends or both - meaning the people that you love and who love you. Presents or no presents: the best present is always the love that we give.

Postmodern Worship - Mission impossible?

I sat together for many hours with the conference team of the European Study Conference for theology students (July 25-29,2013 in Berlin), discussing about possible and necessary reforms of worship. Is the Sunday morning Worship a tradition of the past, no longer relevant to people's spirituality in a diverse and individualistic society? Can't we worship just as well at home and alone? What about Holy Communion?
In many countries, churches lament the empty pews. What is is that keeps people away, even those who say that they do believe in God? Isn't Sunday worship service celebrating the ressurection of Christ? The essence of our being in Christ? But if that is so, why are believers not coming in larger numbers.
Do we need new forms of celebrating worship, or will those just attract people for some time and pass as fashions do? Do we need to look to liturgies of the past that should be reconsidered and possibly reformed rather than discarded. What is Worship, we asked and what place does it hold in people's lives today and in our various countries in Europe. More questions than answers, and so we would love for you to comment and even more: we would like for Theology students from all over Europe to come and participate in our conference.

Hat ein Kontinent eine Seele?

Am Samstag werde ich in Prag mit dem Team des Bibeldialogs der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa (kurz GEKE) die Tagung "Eine Seele für Europa. Was Europa lebendig macht" vorbereiten.

What is the soul of a continent?

Tomorrow I will be in Prague preparing a Bible Dialogue with the team from the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (short CPCE). The title will be: A soul for Europe. Making Europe come alive. The conference itself will be in Berlin from June 19-23, 2013:
"What is the soul of a continent? If there is such a thing, is it big enough for Hungarians or Danes, Italians or Swedes? How can smaller countries with their specific charm and history contribute to the liveliness of Europe? Who are the great European Protestants besides Luther and Calvin, Comenius and Grundtvig? We will discuss what Protestantism means in terms of a European Soul. And: How Christian is the soul of Europe?"
I would like to know what you think about this? If you think the conference sounds interesting, save the date!
