Meanwhile
all our guest speakers have agreed to come and I have organized the excursion
to the Stasi-Museum. Our conference is just about booked out, but the hotel
tells me I could have additional rooms. The conference is from April 2 to 4,
the week right after Easter. We will talk about freedom movements in Europe,
our own ideas of freedom and what it means to raise our children to be free
people. We will discuss a lot, work in small groups and with methods from
applied drama and world café. In case you are interested, let me know if I
should send you the conference agenda for a more detailed idea (mail to
hahn@eaberlin.de). The conference is in German, but if you need interpretation,
I will see that we get an interpreter.
EUROPEAN BIBLE DIALOGUES: Most posts will be both in English and in German on request; comments please in either of these languages - Die meisten Posts werden auf Wunsch zweimal, deutsch und englisch, eingestellt; Kommentare bitte auf Deutsch oder Englisch.

Freiheit ... und nur wenige freie Plätze - Freedom and only a few free places left at our conference

- The Bible is for every one
"Preiswerte Bibeln für alle! - das war das Ziel des Carl Hildebrand
Freiherr von Canstein Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts.
in aller Weisheit" (Kol. 3,16).
It was the goal of Carl Hildebrand Freiherr von Canstein to make the bible affordable to all. In his days, the 17th century, this was still a real problem, as even middle class people with a hunger for written knowledge could not afford their own bible. Today the problem is more the accessability of biblical texts and so the Bibelkabinett in Berlin as well as the Bible Dialoges open doors to a better understanding of biblical texts and traditions.
As it is a little more quiet in our office these day, I finally met with two great people from the Berlin "Bibelkabinett". It is amazing how diverse and informative a programme only two people can offer: Exhibitions, introduction to the world of the bible, student and children's study sessions, including testing a real printing press like in the days of Martin Luther. Last week, Ms Witt, Mr Gebauer and I have decided to start a long over-due closer cooperation between the Bibelkabinett and the Bible Dialogues.

Wir haben das gute Teil erwählt ... EBD 09
In
We chose the good part... EBD 09
Sunday we
finished our Bible Dialogue on the topic „ Love the Lord your God … and your
neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39). The foundation of this bible
dialogue were the hours of bible study (the Good Samaritan (Luke 10,25-37),
Mary and Martha (Lukas 10,38-42) and Corinthians 13) and plenty of time for
discussions in small groups. Those formed the basis on which other approaches,
like the history of love or Love in the arts – could build. Silhouette of
biblical couples found special interest among participants.
Some were
surprised that it is not the wounded man who is the neighbor to the god Samaritan
but that it is the other way around. With this in mind the commandment to love
our enemies is seen in a new light. We all knew of course the commandment to
love the Lord, our God, but did we ever realize what it means that God wants to
be loved by us?
Loving God
looks different for all of us. Maybe it is easier to speak openly about our
thoughts in an unfamiliar environment? I am always amazed how open and friendly
participants communicate at Bible Dialogues.
Mary and
Martha (Luke 10, 38-42), the two sisters, had us thinking and discussing. Most
of us identified with Martha, the one who busies herself taking care of
everyone’s needs but her own. In Berlin at the Bible Dialogue we could be like Mary,
and the good part we chose for ourselves: listening to the Bible and to each
other, we take with us for good.

BerlinerInnen
können gerne noch dazukommen...
Love for God, our neighbour and ourselves
Today we begin this year's first Bible Dialogue. Our topic is really three topics. Loving God, loving our neighbour and loving ourselves: none of these "loves" are always easy. We wil approach the topc with Corinthians, the Good Samaritan and Mary and Martha. There wil be some art to find a new angle to look at our ideas of love, as well. And we will discuss our modern views on love and how we got there. I look forward to the encounter. We are a small group of participants this year - maybe beginning on Ash Wednesday was not such a good idea? We do miss some Rhinelanders... In any case, Berliners are still welcome to join us spontaenously.
