ESOTERIK UND ATHEISMUS - opposites or two sides of one coin?

Am Montag ging unser Bibeldialog zum Thema „WORAN MACHE ICH MEIN LEBEN FEST? Zwischen Esoterik und neuem Atheismus“ zu Ende – ein weites Feld, aber die beiden Begriffe, Atheismus und Esoterik hatten doch einiges gemeinsam: den Wunsch nach einer schnellen und klaren Antwort. Gott ist unverfügbar und unberechenbar; Gott lässt sich nicht einkaufen, nicht mit Geld und nicht mit guten Taten. Wie passt er denn dann in unsere Welt? Aber immerhin sind noch mehr als die Hälfte der Deutschen zahlende Mitglieder einer der beiden großen Kirchen. Ungezählt sind die, die zwar an Gott glauben, aber keine offiziellen Gemeinschaft angehören. Die Zahl der organisierten Atheisten nimmt sich im Vergleich sehr viel kleiner aus, aber schmerzlich viele gehören zu denen, die einfach ganz gut ohne Kirche oder Gott auskommen. Sie haben vergessen, dass sie Gott vergessen haben, haben nie viel von Gott erfahren und das Leben geht ja auch so ganz gut. In den Bundesländern der ehemaligen DDR ist man da schon zwei Generationen weiter. Was tun? Eine Sprache finden, die auch von denen verstanden wird, die die Kirchen schon lange nicht mehr suchen – außer nach Katastrophen vielleicht – dann wenn sonst niemand Worte findet, erwarten viele immer noch von der Kirche, dass sie etwas sagt, Trost schenkt, eine Sinn in der Tragödie erspürt.   Aber schnelle Antworten werden auch dann nicht geliefert. Das Leben ist zu komplex. Gott bleibt unverfügbar.

Monday we ended our Bibeldialogue on “WHAT DETERMINES MY LIFE? Between esotericism and new atheism”. A wife field, but the two realms of esotericism and atheism have a few things in common: the wish for a quick and tangible answer. God, on the other hand, cannot be bought, not with money and not with good deeds. God is out of our reach, intangible and unpredictable. How then does he fit in our modern world? More than half of Germans stil belong to one of the two big Churches and that doesn’t count those who believe in God but do not belong to any official community. The number of organized atheists is much smaller, but a painfully large number of people feel that they can do just fine without religion and without God. They have forgotten that they forgot God, never knew much about him anyway. In the former GDR-part of Germany people this has been the case for three generations by now. What to do? Find a language that can but understood by those who don’t look for a church ever – unless there has been a catastrophe – because when disaster strikes, when there are no answers to be found, many still expect the church to find words, to say something that gives solace, that allows to see a meaning behind a tragedy. But no quick and easy answers even then. Life is too complex. God remains intangible.
