Today we will begin planning for the Bible Dialogue on Tolerance next
year in June. Reformation and Tolerance in actually this year's main topic in
the Reformation Decade, but it will be interesting to also look back on
discussions, papers or projects and their conclusions: Do we need to be more tolerant or do we need to define limits to tolerance? Tolerance is never a
passive thing and hardly ever does it turn out to be the path of least
resistance. Tolerance demands an active examination of the "other" and
our own prejudice. Just how tolerant are we towards our neighbours, friends
and strangers; and which are the prejudices that block our view?
EUROPEAN BIBLE DIALOGUES: Most posts will be both in English and in German on request; comments please in either of these languages - Die meisten Posts werden auf Wunsch zweimal, deutsch und englisch, eingestellt; Kommentare bitte auf Deutsch oder Englisch.

TOLERANZ. Herausforderung oder Überforderung? Challenging or overwhelming?

Was heißt eigentlich EUROPÄISCH? What does that mean: EUROPEAN?
Was heißt Europäisch?
The team of
next year’s pedagogical study conference and I are in Prague right now to
prepare for the Bible dialogue on the topic „What is European?“ Is there such a
thing as a European identity? In a touristically developed city like Prague
this is an interesting question. The inner city looks like so many cities with
the same fancy stores. What can we find that is typically Czech? More than
Bohemian crystal, dumplings and good beer? And are these not mostly offered for
the sake of tourists? Is all this still authentic? Next year, in the week after
Easter (April 22-26) we will take a closer look at Prague, and at our own
identities as Christians, parents or our parents’ children, as Germans, Czechs,
Hungarians, … or Europeans. Whatever that may imply.

GOTTES LIEBE UND GOTTES ZORN predigen - Preachin GOD's Love and GOD's wrath
A Bible Dialogue for lay preachers on the love of God and the wrath of God. The conference will be in German and is unfortunately already booked out. If you would like to share your thoughts on the subject, I will pass them on to the group on November.

Ist Glück Glückssache? - Is happiness a matter of luck?
Today, we finished
our youth seminar on Happiness. It was so very interesting and impressive that
I found no time to sit down and post something earlier. And I don’t mean to
praise my own work, because it was the participants that made this a
most remarkable experience. They came from Germany, Switzerland, Latvia,
Romania and Ukraine. The best was as usual the evening with the reports from the countries:
the five people from Ukraine had not only brought a film of their home city Charkow
but had also prepared a series of interviews with people on their idea of
happiness. Our cultures and our ways of life may be quite different, but we
found much in common: Without love, friendship, self-confidence and
recognition, without faith, we cannot be truly happy.

WENIGER ist anders - LESS is different
malt.
Today we said goodbye after our conference LESS IS DIFFERENT, but thoughts on the topic will continue with us into our daily lives. We were a colorful group, from 24 to 81 years old, from 5 different countries and a variety of professions. Some were quite at home in the Bible, other not so much, but no matter which was the case, we had very good intensive talks - not just on Biblical texts. The fractures we all experienced in our lives found a place in the conference even if we did not have time enough to share enough of how we came through. Maybe some of the participants manage to stay in touch and continue and deepen their discussions. We were all deeply impressed by Günther Klößinger, who did not just charm us by his lively performance of fairy tales from all over the world, but also by telling us about his life's path from a young and talented graphic artist and soon to be teacher to a blind storyteller, who paint his pictures with words and music.
