Thoughts and Prayers before Pentecost

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.
Wende dich zu mir und sei mir gnädig; denn ich bin einsam und elend. (Psalm 25,16)

How many might feel this way today? And how many might lack human company with whom to share this feeling? How many miss a human touch these days? Social distancing, no handshake, and certainly no hugs; whoever is alone right now, might be alone for a long while. But it is summer soon. When the sun has snuck by the clouds gently caresses our faces. We ask you, please, loving God, comfort us when we fear that you are further away than the sun. Let us feel that you are as close as the sun beam on our skin.
How many call on God and yet remain lonely? Staying at home is only an option for those who have a home. And not every house is a home that offers warmth and closeness. And it is summer soon. Merciful God, we ask you, please, let us see with our hearts and let our neighbor’s loneliness and misery speak to us. Grant us a language that reaches people; a smile or a friendly word can touch people and allow closeness even at a physical distance.
All over the world there are strict rules of social distancing and so the nations are widening the distances between each other. And yet, we are more connected than ever. Fear of sickness and economic hardship keeps us in thrall and distract us from the greed and cruelty of some few who are enriching themselves even now. And it is Pentecost soon. Good God, we ask you, please, let the mighty and the governors see with their hearts and find a language that can make all people understand that we will only solve the problems of this world togethe.
And I thank you, God, for being given the language of prayer.
