Rev
Immo Wache is a minister in the German congregation on Tenerife and I am very
grateful for the thought he shares and lets me share on our blog. Thank you,
Immo!
I just
bought a watch that can count my steps. One is supposed to walk 6-8000 steps
every day to do something for my health. I manage an average of… -
anyway, let me calculate: Every step
has to carry my 90kg. 6000 steps times 90 kg makes 540.000 kilogram per day, my
legs move 540 tons every day. And that supposed to be good for me. That’s
crazy!
Hiking, I
sometimes nick my skin at some bush. It bleeds, but after a short while, the
bleeding stops and a few days later, one can’t see a thing. The skin is
a miracle! It is amazing!
Or, did you
know that the lungs of a healthy person my age ‚ have a volume of almost 5
liters? (Sure, when I was still doing serious sport, it was a good deal more)
or about 6 liters of blood? And it all keeps going, because my heart beats and
beats and beats till my last day. And so does yours! Why? A miracle!
There is so
much about the body to be amazed by. One should tell oneself that more often,
when looking at the mirror: Sometimes we just stand there, all wrinkly, new
wrinkled at the neck aren’t pretty. Hair where nobody needs them. Even if I
don’t like everything about me: these legs will carry 540 tins of body weight
today. This heart will chase 6 liters of blood round and round through my body
and this magical organ called lungs will provide oxygen so that I can think,
feel, laugh, cry, love or mourn. I am a miracle and I didn’t do athing for it.
„I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well.“ These words are from
Psalm 139. Sometimes people like to put special emphasis on their achievements
and feel they need to set themselves apart as a kind of elite: Wealth (house,
boat, car), children who have a career. It annoys me a little. Other people are
miracles as well, wonderfully made by God, even without a house, a boat, a car,
a career!
Sometimes
people question absolutely everything. It is all bad. They don’t like anything.
They don’t like themselves and so they are often unbearable for others.
Psalm 139
reminds us that we are miracles: miracles of nature ad a wonderful special part
of God’s creation. Each and every one in unique (it is said that among the 7.7
billion people o earth 7 at most are very similar to me or anyone else. We
should say this more often or have it said: „I will praise
You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I
know this very well.”
Maybe then we would be more mindful about our bodies and the lives of
others. One does cherish precious gifts and life is such a great gift! Let us
be mindful let us me amazed and most of all: stay wonderful,
That is what Rev. Wache wishes for you.
